We use top of the line architectural asphalt shingles that are designed to handle the harsh climates of Canada and are nailed by every full course to manufacturer’s specifications, not at the speed the crew is comfortable. No matter how nice the forecast is that week, our shingle roof installation starts with ice and water shield at all eaves, valleys and roof penetrations. In full underlayment, the underlayment is installed over the entire deck. Ridge cap, drip edge and all perimeter details are done correctly before we consider the job finished. We fit EPDM rubber membrane where thermal movement tolerance and long service life matter most, modified bitumen where surface durability and puncture resistance take priority, and tar and gravel built-up roofing where the existing system is being replaced in kind. With our flat roof installations, before any membrane is laid down, we will verify drainage points, internal drains and scuppers location since water will find any hole when it sits on a flat surface. Where thermal performance is part of your project scope, insulation board installation happens before membrane application rather than afterward.

A layer-over hides exactly the conditions that decide how long your new roof lasts, and those conditions do not improve under cover. Our roof replacement service takes down your entire roof system, uncovers the deck to allow us to inspect it, and fixes it before we place anything new on it. That’s the difference between a replacement that was made to last to its rated life, and one that silently becomes burdened with all the problems the replacement was supposed to solve.

This is determined by the roof slope, more than by preference. Asphalt shingles are the logical roofing material for the majority of homes in the GTA capable of shedding water by gravity due to pitched roofs, and the manufacturer warranties and curb appeal are a consequence. In the case of low-slope and flat surfaces, gravity is not an option, and instead a continuous waterproof membrane with engineered drainage is required. Many properties will have both, especially if they have a flat roofed extension or garage. We score the entire frame, not the obvious part and we will be honest with you when a single system is really all you need and when it’s truly necessary to use two systems.

Where Installations Succeed Or Fail
DECK
The Deck Decides How Long Your New Roof Lasts
Although the shingles may be good, sheathing that has become soft, wetted or with a diminished fastener holding ability will not hold a new roof securely. Our crews evaluate the entire deck for soft spots, water damage and fastener holding power as the old system is removed, and we replace damaged patches of the deck before installing a new system—not after it becomes apparent. This is the stage most commonly skipped on a cheap quote, and it is the single clearest reason two installations priced differently perform so differently within five years.
FLAT ROOFS
Why Flat Roofs Fail, And What Prevents It
Nearly all flat roof failures can be attributed to one of two causes. Unfinished to manufacturer lap seams split open due to thermal movement and water infiltrates. Drainage that has not been tested will allow water to pool on the surface, where it will work against the membrane until it finds a vulnerable spot. All seams are concluded to specification and inspected prior to completion of the project and we confirm that drains and scuppers will not block water flow under real-life loads to the surface even if the original design is still effective.
CLIMATE
Ontario Weather Is The Real Test Of Any Installation
Our climate subjects roofs to a cycle that few other climates match up to. Meltwater refreezes at the eave line and backs under shingles, wind picks up poorly fastened courses at the ridge, freeze-thaw cycles repeatedly at each seam/fastener, and the heat and cold of the summer expand and contract materials repeatedly. Because we install with these conditions assumed, and not hoped for, ice and water shield is installed at every vulnerable point and the ventilation assessment is part of our structural evaluation. An over-wintered roof is not a very good test.

What Happens Once The Work Is Done
Before project close, we check fastener placement throughout all shingle courses and seam integrity of every membrane installation. Brad Ellis conducts craftsmanship inspection at crucial stages and also prior to the crew depart your property. All debris is removed and a magnetic nail sweep is done on the area around the house, such as yard and driveway. All installations come with manufacturer warranties and warranty documentation will be provided to you, and we stay on hand after installation to provide seasonal inspections, preventative maintenance scheduling and emergency storm responses throughout the service area.
Keep The Roof Working After We Leave
We carry out preventative maintenance programmes for shingle and flat systems, as the problems that can cost a lot of money often begin small and are only noticeable from the roof. We conduct seasonal inspections of the core structure, ice and water shield, integrity of the deck and sheathing, and attic ventilation and the perimeter water controls which maintain meltwater flow. On flat roofs we also remove debris and growth prior to it holding water against the membrane. Focused patch efforts are addressed as they occur without the need to “catch up” and emergency storm response is maintained throughout the entire service area.
