Once one begins to fail, you will know and the repair cost is not a small one. Professional Siding Installation That Starts At The Sheathing
When removing the old siding we remove it cleanly and inspect what’s underneath before new siding is installed. Sheathing is checked for moisture, decay and loose fastenings, all things old siding tends to conceal for years. If we discover anything, it is addressed first. The siding over the poor underlayment appears good for one or two years, but the issues below eventually become apparent on the upper surface and they are now paying out twice. Before committing to anything, we provide you with a written estimate that includes all of the work that we expect to do, including any repair work.

Flawless Siding Replacement Fitted To Manufacturer Specification
Each board and panel is installed as manufacturer’s specifications dictate ensuring your warranty remains intact and your finish remains straight. Starter strips are level, anything above them follows that level and a couple of millimeters will show at the top of the wall. Fastening patterns are based on spec sheet, not the quickest path. Panels are allowed to expand due to temperature. Each penetration, vents, lights, taps, meter boxes, etc. are sealed correctly as they are installed, not caulked at the end as an after thought.

Expert Trim And Corner Finishing That Keeps Water Out
That’s where siding fails, and where we finish the trim, corners and junctions to a fully weathertight standard. Water penetration is very uncommon with flat panel faces. The true dangers are found at corners, window and door borders, the seam where the siding meets the roof line and where pipes or cables have been routed through the wall. These locations should be flashed correctly and the overlaps and assembly sequence should be appropriate to direct run-off away from the area. Cheap installs use sealant for this task, and sealant will only last a couple years, but correct detailing will continue to work without sealant.
What Happens During A Siding Installation?
First we protect the ground, garden beds and all structures attached to the walls. The old siding is taken off one elevation at a time, rather than stripping the entire house at once, which safeguards the house against weather if it turns. The sheathing is inspected and patched and house wrap is applied. When installing new siding, the work begins at the bottom and trim and corners are installed as we move along. Sealings are done as penetrations are made. We clean the area when we finish each day and Brad walks through it with you before we go.
Why Does House Wrap Go On Before The Siding?
House wrap is your second line of defence. No siding is watertight and some water will find its way behind siding in driving rain at the joints and around openings. House wrap provides a way for that water to escape rather than letting it get to the sheathing. It also prevents wind from going straight through openings and decreasing the effectiveness of your insulation. It will only work as long as it is lapped correctly with upper sheets over lower and taped at the seams. It is lapped incorrectly to direct water into wall rather than away from the wall.
Why Does Vinyl Siding Buckle After A Few Winters?
Almost always because it was nailed too tight. Vinyl expands and contracts much more than you might think from a January morning to a July afternoon and it is intended to move perhaps a bit on its fasteners as it does. If it is nailed against the wall it will not be able to move and so will buckle in the heat and crack in the cold. This is also the case for off-center nail in the slot and nail driving at an angle. Modern Vinyl will cope with GTA temperature changes with appropriate clearance. When worn tightly, it will begin to show waves by the second summer.
Which Siding Suits A South-Facing Wall?
Direction changes what the wall has to cope with. Colour fade and movement of heat are more significant on the south and west elevations where there is more sun, and fibre cement retains the colour of the paint over many years compared to vinyl. Less sun, but more moisture on the north walls, so anything with good moisture resistance, and a surface that does not allow biological growth. What walls exposed to wind-driven rain require more than a specific product is trim and flashing that is done flawlessly. We traverse each of the four levels before making any recommendations.
How Long Does A Siding Installation Take?
The range for most single-family homes is between a few days and two weeks and the straightforward answer is related to 3 factors: the size and complexity of the walls, what we discover when we take off the old siding, and the weather. A simple box design house with proper sheathing is very mobile. All of the gables, dormers, windows & corners slow things down as the trim work is where the hours are spent. Sheathing repairs will increase time. We give you a realistic timeline based on our actual crew schedule rather than a figure that sounds good on the phone.
What Should You Check Before Hiring A Siding Company?
Ask five things. Does the quote cover removal of the old siding and repair of the sheathing or is it something added on later? Is house wrap in the scope. The company or a crew that is subcontracted? If there is rot under what? and what is the price for that. But what warranty will you get for the labour, as well as the material? Broadly speaking, ambiguous responses to any of them indicate that the quote is where they’ve trimmed to make it more competitive, and this preparation is the portion that you cannot verify after the job is completed.
Keeping New Siding In Good Condition
New siding needs very little, but not nothing. During our maintenance programme we inspect each panel and trim piece around the house to see if there are any cracks, loose joints or seams at penetrations, clean off growth and stains that erode the surface, and document any items that need attention but are not yet a major problem. Spring and autumn are the useful times, spring because a winter of movement shows which joints held, and autumn because it is worth closing any gaps before the cold arrives.
